How it works

AVIF keeps the PNG’s transparency while compressing far harder than PNG’s lossless storage, so a heavy PNG can shrink enormously. The cost is encoding time — AVIF compression is CPU-intensive and runs on the server. By default this uses AVIF’s lossy encoder, which suits photographic PNGs; the quality slider tunes it, and the alpha channel is always preserved. Very flat graphics with hard edges may prefer PNG or a high quality setting to avoid softened edges.
